Day 1-2: Drake Passage

Level of passage: 2 (on a scale of
1-6)
Cumulative hours slept: 40 (Warren: 8)
Numbers of lectures slept through: 4
Dinner: 4 sips of soup (each, Whitney and E.B.)
Vomiting in Public: 2
Whales seen: 6
Penguins swimming by the ship: 9

Quote of the day:
Warren, after the penguin power lecture:
“See girls, you’ll be wonderful mothers because you automatically vomit up your food.”

We have finally made it through the Drake Passage and are again able to sit up and write. Yesterday we had a lot of time to get to know the other people on the ship. Warren has an Australian doppelganger and a Canadian George W. Bush Sr. has also made it onboard (photos of both to follow when we are on dry land). We have also heard rumors that there is a girl on the ship who is cycling around South America and has attached herself to the stationary bike in the gym so she can bike the equivalent number of miles that the ship progresses. Warren made a great point that lifting weights while the ship is moving is sort of the ultimate in core-building; who needs zumba when you have an ocean to toss you around. The food may be great, only Warren knows. Whitney also wants it to be noted that the first time a cute guy talked to her she immediately excused herself to throw up. She is so loyal. We are loving the other travelers. The average number of countries visited per capita appears to be around 55. It makes for really interesting discussions. We also met someone on the ship who has pictures of the travel company’s last boat, which sunk in 2007. Loved the pictures of it sinking with all the passengers getting off safely. Whitney threw up.
We are about to have our first landing, on the Shetland islands (no ponies, I already checked). We will hopefully see penguins and seals. There were long lectures which went through the specific types that we would be seeing but we fell asleep.
(we tried to upload at this point but couldn’t get a connection so below is our next entry)
