Day 2: Whitney gets bit by a penguin

We finally got to go on shore! Warren prepared for a three-month hike with his pack and we think we can safely say that he is the only person who brought an entire change of clothes with him. The rest of us just assumed that if we got wet we would take the 5 min zodiac ride back to the boat and change there.

Whitney got bit by a 1 ft penguin that was attracted to the red stitching near her knees. We learned that penguin guano smells really horrible. We stayed up until 1:30AM playing speed scrabble as a semi-drinking game. Warren loved the lecture on Shackleton’s voyage as well as the lecture on improving photography techniques. E.B. perfected her technique of sleeping in the lounge chairs. Everyone is feeling better and eating at least 3 meals a day. Oh, and the sauna has been tested out and it is wonderful.

Today we woke up to the sight of our first iceberg. We have two landings planned for today. It is rainy and snowy outside and somehow still amazingly beautiful. Warren decided to try wearing contacts for the first time in a decade and nearly blinded himself. He’ll be back in glasses for the rest of the trip.

  1. Dear daughters of mine, it appears you are educating your father on how to travel without multiple hours of wait time in airports and on exploring without his disaster master backup outfit. He has been packing and repacking for this trip every weekend for the past 3 months. I bet if you conducted a contest for the most prepared person on the boat he would be a serious contender. So the Drake passage was a little rough :) There is nothing like learning your body is ultimately in charge when nausea and vomiting (my worst hitch hiking buddies on rough water) arrive on the trip. So how does a penguin bite feel? I think that puts Whitney into a very elite group of first hand explorers. To my beloved husband, I can't wait to see your pictures and hear about your adventure. You are a very lucky man, no nausea, a captive audience and two great daughters to explore with. xoxoxo

  2. Whit- did the penguin bite leave any marks? Great story for the scar game, although I doubt it left a mark on anything besides your pants. E.B.- late night speed scrabble, the sauna and sleeping in lounge chairs sounds just like you. I can't wait to hear more about the other passengers. btw, send me info if you want the phone bill paid. Warren- way to be the only one into the lectures! I'm sure Whitney and E.B. will benefit from your attendance and attention to the information. Enjoy the other excursions today!

  4. I've really enjoyed lurking on this site. It's all so well written and funny and I am green with envy.

It was such fun to read between the lines on this post--there's so much left unsaid.

  5. Kristin - if you go to the post office and give them the home phone number you can pay the bill ($200?) or I will pay it when I get back. No problem by me, only if you want it back.

Mom - we miss you so much! Thanks for your note. Dad misses you a ton and always wants us to write especially for you. He is such a romantic. We really are having the time of our lives. Wish you were with us.
